How Do Hummingbirds Sleep? Torpor, Roosting, and the Choice Between Them
Hummingbirds sleep perched, almost always alone, gripping a thin twig inside dense cover, and on nights when their fuel reserves will not stretch to dawn they enter torpor — a controlled shutdown in which body temperature falls from roughly 40°C (107°F) toward the surrounding air, and heart rate drops from about 1,220 beats per minute in flight to near 50. The U.S. National Park Service publishes those figures for Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna), whose resting heart rate it gives as 420 to 460 beats per minute, and which has been documented in torpor at a body temperature of 8.8°C (48°F). Torpor is neither automatic nor nightly for every bird. Field recordings published in 2020 by Blair Wolf's team measured bouts running from 2.3 to 12.9 hours, and other work shows many birds using a shallower setting instead.
Where hummingbirds go at night
The roost is chosen, not stumbled into. William Calder's 1973 study in Ecology, working on Broad-tailed and Calliope hummingbirds in the Rocky Mountains, found nest sites sitting under overhead cover — a branch, a fork, a canopy of foliage — that blocks the open sky. The physics is unglamorous. A clear night sky is effectively a cold surface, and a small body radiating into it loses more heat than one radiating into the underside of a branch. Calder estimated those losses from surface temperatures; the logic governs an overnight perch as much as a nest.
That is why backyard watchers who go looking rarely find anything. A roosting hummingbird picks interior twigs, screened by leaves, invisible from below and from above. Owls, jays and snakes hunt the alternative.
Sheltering can go further. In the high Andes, the Andean Hillstar (Oreotrochilus estella) roosts inside caves and rock crevices, described in F. Lynn Carpenter's monograph Ecology and Evolution of an Andean Hummingbird. Rock gives back stored heat slowly, and a crevice removes wind and sky at once.
Torpor has settings, and the bird selects one
The common picture of a nightly on-off switch does not survive contact with the recordings. Anusha Shankar and colleagues, in work on the shallow-to-deep torpor spectrum, found all three species they monitored using both shallow and deep states, with 24 of 33 individuals employing shallow torpor at some point. The proportion of the night spent there differed sharply by species: about 5 percent in Black-chinned Hummingbirds, 25 percent in Blue-throated Mountain-gems, and 33 percent in Rivoli's Hummingbirds. Their reading was that birds carrying larger energy stores have more room to avoid dropping all the way down.

Wolf, a physiological ecologist at the University of New Mexico, described handling birds at the bottom of that range to Science News: "They're cold as a rock. If you didn't know better you'd think they were dead." On the exit: "You see the bird quivering there, then all the sudden its eyes pop open."
Why hibernation is the wrong model
AI-generated summaries and popular guides routinely call torpor "hibernation-like." The comparison explains the energy logic and misleads about everything else.
Take the Arctic ground squirrel, the mammalian extreme. Brian Barnes, of the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, reported in Science in 1989 that hibernating squirrels held core body temperatures as low as −2.9°C without freezing, supercooled rather than protected by antifreeze. That season runs seven to eight months. Every two to three weeks it shivers back to about 36.4°C for 12 to 15 hours, then cools again; those arousals can consume up to 86 percent of a full torpor–arousal cycle's energy.
Hummingbird torpor shares the mechanism and almost none of the schedule. It lasts hours, not months, and ends every morning rather than every third week. Shankar's 2020 paper in the Journal of Avian Biology, covering 43 wild-caught birds across eight species, found the probability of entering torpor was unrelated to nighttime temperature; birds at warm tropical sites used it too. That paper measured hourly savings of 65 to 92 percent against normothermy. Wolf has put the figure at roughly 95 percent. Shankar's more consequential result is that total nightly savings tracked how long a bird stayed torpid, which follows day length, more closely than how cold it got.
The viral numbers, and what was actually measured
Three figures circulate constantly and each one loses its meaning without a species attached.
Heart rate. The often-quoted 1,260 beats per minute belongs to the Blue-throated Mountain-gem and traces to Lasiewski and Lasiewski's 1967 paper in The Auk, which remains paywalled. Robert Lasiewski's own 1964 study in Physiological Zoology is instructive: his maximum recorded rate was 1,200 beats per minute, and he attributed the highest values to struggling or excited restrained birds, writing that "it has not yet been possible to record the heart rates of hummingbirds during, or shortly after, flight." A number widely captioned as a flight measurement was, in that study, nothing of the kind.
Wingbeats. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology gives about 53 beats per second for the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The National Park Service gives about 50 for the same bird, and 12 to 80 across the family. Neither usually states whether it describes hovering or forward flight, which is part of why the numbers travel so easily and explain so little.
Posture. The standard explanation for hummingbirds found hanging upside down is that a sleeping bird's foot locks automatically onto the perch. That mechanism appears not to exist. Peter Galton and Jim Shepherd tested it in European Starlings, reporting in 2012 in the Journal of Experimental Zoology that anesthetized birds could not stay perched once unconscious, and that starlings whose digital flexor tendons had been severed slept on the perch much as unoperated ones did. Gripping requires active muscle contraction. An upside-down hummingbird is worth a second look rather than a shrug.
Finding a bird that looks dead
The National Park Service description is precise: "A torpid hummingbird will be inactive, with feathers fluffed and eyes closed—do not disturb!" Torpid birds turn up at dusk or in the first hour of daylight, the windows for entering and leaving the state. The measured bouts are nocturnal; a hummingbird sitting still at noon is usually just resting.
Wildlife rehabilitators generally advise this sequence:
- Observe from a distance for at least 20 minutes. Breathing in deep torpor is shallow and intermittent, so stillness proves nothing early on.
- Remove the threats without handling the bird. Bring cats indoors, keep dogs and children away, shade it if it sits in direct sun.
- Do not feed, warm in the hand, or shake it awake. A chilled hummingbird cannot swallow safely, and rewarming has its own pace.
- Watch for the arousal sequence. Quivering, then faster breathing, then open eyes, then flight.
- Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator if there is no arousal well into full daylight, or immediately if the bird cannot perch, holds a wing wrong, or has been in a cat's mouth. Bacteria from cat saliva kill birds that look uninjured. Animal Help Now (ahnow.org) maintains a referral list.
Keeping the bird is illegal in the United States. Hummingbirds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and rehabilitation requires a permit.
One popular fear deserves naming, because a qualified voice disputes it. "Perch hypothermia" — the claim that hummingbirds drinking cold sugar water at winter feeders chill dangerously and lose the ability to fly — rests largely on a single 1983 observation of a Rufous Hummingbird that would fluff up, tip upside down and fall off the perch. Sheri Williamson, naturalist and author of A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America, argues the bird was in torpor rather than in danger, citing hundreds of thousands of observations of hummingbirds perch-feeding at very low temperatures with no ill effects.
Reducing avoidable risk after dark
Glass is the measurable hazard. Scott Loss and colleagues, working with the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, estimated in The Condor in 2014 that building collisions kill 365 to 988 million birds a year in the United States, about 44 percent of that toll at residences rather than towers. Screens, exterior films and closely spaced dot patterns on the outside surface work; interior blinds do not. The same team's 2013 estimate put free-ranging domestic cats at 1.3 to 4.0 billion birds annually, which makes a cat indoors overnight the cheapest intervention.
Leave feeders up through cold snaps rather than taking them in at dusk; a bird arriving at first light has fasted all night. Keep porch lights off or shielded, since artificial light draws insects, and insects draw predators to a bird that cannot respond quickly. An untrimmed shrub or conifer supplies the screened twigs the birds want.
Watching a season instead of a night
A single torpid bird on a cold morning tempts a general rule, and the recordings suggest almost every general rule is wrong somewhere. Torpor depth varies between species, between individuals, and between nights. One study documented deep torpor across eye-surface temperatures spanning 5.9 to 24.1°C.
Useful observation is dated, repeated and paired with conditions: the overnight low, the sky, whether the bird fed late the previous evening, how long after sunrise it moved. Wolf's team took its measurements at about 3,800 metres at Bosque Japani, Peru, between 7 and 18 March 2015, with nightly air temperature minima of 2.4 to 5.9°C, on 26 birds from six species. That is the evidence base behind numbers now repeated as universal.
